Since coming back to Instagram, singer Selena Gomez has reclaimed the throne of the most followed woman on Instagram. Taking the title from Kylie Jenner after the singer returned to the app after leaving an assistant to post for her, fans were clearly excited to see her return.

Now as of March 1, Gomez has gained 10 million followers since February 22, and Jenner has lost roughly 1 million followers. The news comes after Jenner had supposedly “shaded” Gomez on Instagram with best friend Hailey Bieber.

Gomez’s return to the app fueled her rise to the top

Kylie Jenner had been the most followed woman on Instagram since January 2022 when she also became the third most followed account, right after Cristiano Ronaldo and Instagram’s official account.

But Gomez changed all that when she returned this year, gaining 382 million followers, leaving Jenner at 380 million and rising to the top.

Now just a week later, Gomez has reached 391 million followers, with Jenner now sitting at 379 million. The exact numbers for those interested are as follows: on February 22, Jenner had 380,425,729 followers, and now on March 1 she has 379,874,072, meaning she has lost roughly 551,657 followers.

Did “shading” Selena Gomez lead to Jenner losing followers?

Fans of Gomez are speculating that Jenner’s loss of followers may be a result of “shading” the ‘Look at her’ singer in an Instagram story post.

In the post, Jenner posted a FaceTime screenshot with friend Hailey Bieber showing each other their eyebrows. They were then accused of “shading” Gomez, seemingly mocking what Gomez called “over-laminated eyebrows”, when she shared her new eyebrow mishap on her own Instagram stories.

“This is reaching. No shade towards Selena ever and I didn’t see her eyebrow posts! U guys are making something out of nothing. This is silly,” Jenner commented on a fan’s analysis on what happened.

Gomez added, “Agreed @kyliejenner. It’s all unnecessary. I’m a fan of Kylie!

After the attention, Gomez announced she was going to briefly step away from social media.

“I’m very happy, I’m so blessed, I have the best friends, the best fans in the whole world, and I just couldn’t be happier,” she said in a TikTok live last Thursday.

“I’m going to be taking a second from social media because this is a little silly. And I’m 30, I’m too old for this, so. But I love you guys so much! And I will see you guys sooner than later, I just... I’m just gonna just take a break from everything.”

She has since returned and hasn’t said anything about the “eyebrow drama” since.
