Shania Twain looks back on intense battle with pneumonia, covid
The country singer revealed she had a near-death experience, which served as inspiration for an upcoming song.
Shania Twain says her scary battle with pneumonia and covid-19 felt like something out of a movie.
The iconic Canadian country singer revealed in an interview with The Mirror that she had to be “air evacuated” from where she was staying in Lake Geneva, Switzerland to a hospital due to her sickness getting progressively worse.
During the peak of the pandemic, she and husband Frédéric Thiébaud were frantic with stress as they tried to locate a bed for her hospital stay and her worsening condition.
“My husband was freaking out, to be honest,” said Twain. “He was really panicking because he was the one having to pull it all together.
“He spent hours and hours every day on the phone, trying to get an air evacuation coordinated, trying to get a bed lined up, as there were none, checking my vital signs. It was just a real nightmare for him.”
She explained how the experience was “like science fiction”, and how she felt like she “was going to another planet.”
“It was progressively getting worse. My vital signs were getting worse … and in the end I had to be air-evacuated,” she continued.
Twain explained that once her husband secured a bed, she was placed in isolation and began plasma therapy, though her condition did not improve right away.
“It took several days to start building up any antibodies at all, so it was a very dangerous time and very scary,” Twain recalls. “I made it through and I’m just so grateful.”
Twain appreciative of care she received
The Grammy-winning artist went on to express her gratitude for her husband and the care that was provided to her.
“I thought, ‘Wow, if I was living alone in a more isolated scenario, I don’t know what would have happened.’ My heart goes out to people who don’t have that support to help them get the right care,” she explained.
The country star also said she used her battle with covid as inspiration for her soon-to-be-released song titled, ‘Inhale/Exhale Air,’ off of her new upcoming album, ‘Queen of Me.’
“It’s a song of gratitude and appreciation, I was inspired that I still had air in my lungs,” Twain concluded.
The song is set to be released along with the rest of her album on February 3, 2023.
