Showtime is turning two of its biggest properties into franchises.

‘Dexter’ was one of the most popular television shows of the 2000s, and fans craving more Dexter Morgan content are getting just that thanks to Showtime.

Chris McCarthy, the Paramount Global executive who was handed creative control of Showtime in 2022, is making ‘Dexter’, as well as ‘Billions’, a key part of the network moving forward.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, multiple new shows are being written and produced that are linked to the ‘Dexter’ universe.

Three ‘Dexter’ spinoffs in the works

‘Dexter: Origins’ is going straight to series. The show will tell the origin story of Michael C. Hall’s serial killer, who first took the network by storm in 2006.

Showtime are also developing a new version of ‘Dexter: New Blood’ that will be a better fit for modern television. Dexter’s son, Harrison, will be the main character in that reimagining of a show that has already been released, but not with any great success.

Lastly, the network is also looking to expand the backstories of other characters within the franchise.

One of those characters is the Trinity Killer, who was played by John Lithgow. Dexter creator Clyde Philips will oversee the franchise for Showtime.

Dexter proved to be a success for Showtime

‘Dexter’ initially ran from 2006 to 2013, with 96 episodes spread out over the course of its nine seasons.

It followed the life of Dexter Morgan, a forensic technician who lived a double life influenced by his homicidal tendencies, with the shows first season based on the 2004 novel ‘Darkly Dreaming Dexter’.

The show was nominated for 24 Primetime Emmy Awards during its run, It was also nominated for 10 Golden Globe Awards, winning two.

‘Billions’ also in line for spinoffs

‘Dexter’ isn’t the only series expanding its universe, with McCarthy also commissioning spinoffs from the series ‘Billions’.

‘Billions: Miami’ will focus on the world of aviation and clientele that believe the rules of society don’t apply to them.

‘Billions: London’ will focus on the world of finance in the United Kingdom, while ‘Millions’ will feature financial mogul wannabes doing whatever is necessary to make it in Manhattan.

Lastly is ‘Trillions’, a drama that will focus on fictional stories of the richest people in the world.
