So bad, it’s good: This Demi Moore 1996 box office flop is dominating global streaming charts

'Striptease', which flopped on its premiere, is having a second life by unexpectedly succeeding on Max.

Demi Moore has been one of the standout actresses of the year. Following her performance as Elizabeth Sparkle in The Substance, the Hollywood star picked up nearly every major award last year, including a Golden Globe.

However, in a surprising upset, she lost the Oscar to Mikey Madison for her remarkable performance in Anora. Moore was left without the long-awaited statuette, but she has recently received some good news about a film that is nearly 30 years old.

Striptease (1996), one of the most controversial films of its time and starring Moore, is experiencing a resurgence on streaming platforms. The movie has broken into the global top 10 most-watched titles on Max, despite having been a major box office failure when it was first released.

What is Striptease about?

Striptease follows Erin Grant, played by Demi Moore, who loses both her job and custody of her daughter. In order to earn money and win her back, she takes a job, reluctantly, at a strip club, where she attracts the attention of a mysterious congressman played by Burt Reynolds.

The film sparked controversy at the time due to its subject matter and Moore’s nudity. When it premiered in 1996, Striptease was a significant flop, earning only $33 million at the domestic box office against a $50 million budget. Globally, however, it performed better, bringing in an additional $80 million.

Directed by Andrew Bergman, the film was based on the bestselling novel of the same name. Because of that success and its high-profile cast, it was expected to do well, but the reality was quite different. Striptease is still widely regarded as one of the worst films ever made.
