MET GALA
Some of the coolest accessories worn on the Met Gala red carpet
From swords, phone purses, and disembodied heads, here are some of the most iconic accessories worn at the Met Gala.
As one of fashion’s biggest nights, it’s only natural that guests at the Met Gala would go out of their way to not only wear the best outfits but also bring their A-game in terms of accessories.
Celebrities have brought with them a number of interesting accessories with them, sometimes even outshining the outfit that they’re wearing. Here’s a look at some of the most interesting accessories ever worn at the Met Gala.
Lady Gaga at the 2019 Met Gala
Lady Gaga’s outfit and accessories at the 2019 Met Gala were shown in a stunning 16-minute performance, where the singer had four-outfit changes, with plenty of accessories, designed by Brandon Maxwell.
For her first look, she sported an oversized neon-pink bow on her hair, and cartoonishly large gold fake eyelashes.
As she revealed her second outfit, she sported an umbrella, posing it with it, before revealing her third outfit, a neon-pink maxi dress accessorized with oversized cat-eye sunglasses, and a novelty 90s cell phone that turned out to be a purse.
For her last outfit reveal, she walked around the red carpet with a pink wheelbarrow, filled with bottles of rosé and pink cowboy hats.
Jared Leto at the 2019 Met Gala
In 2019, actor Jared Leto arrived at the Met Gala in a stunning satin neck-high gown with a crystal harness on top and silver shoes. But those aren’t the details that made people turn their heads.
Leto arrived holding his own severed head, posing with the odd accessory choice by looking into its eyes. The accessory was made for Leto by Gucci and refers to their Fall 2018 runway looks, which saw models similarly holding their own severed heads as they made their way on the catwalk.
Grimes at the 2021 Met Gala
Musician Grimes arrived at the 2021 Met Gala wearing a nude illusion black and white sci-fi-inspired gown designed by Iris Van Herpen, where she held a book, and wore a chrome face mask. The alien look was completed with a sword, which was actually a repurposed AR-15.
The mask Grimes wore is actually a prop from David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation of the novel ‘Dune’ by Frank Herbert and predates Denis Villeneuve’ latest ‘Dune’ adaptation by almost 40 years.
Lana Del Rey at the 2018 Met Gala
For the 2018 ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ theme, Lana Del Rey arrived on the red carpet wearing an angelic-inspired dress designed by Gucci.
She completed her look with a blue feathered halo headpiece with a halo, and a chest piece that portrayed a golden heart stabbed with seven daggers, referring to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Catholicism. She also posed with gold opera glasses with blue eyes on the side facing whatever she was looking at.
