Stand up comedian Jim Gaffigan is not a fan of Thanksgiving: “Let’s be real, turkey is kind of garbage”
There is no way around it, however hard you try, it’s impossible to make turkey interesting. “Anything that requires THAT much gravy...”
Not everyone is a fan of Thanksgiving. For some, it’s too stressful, others are put off by the holiday’s dark and complex history, and some just don’t like the food or are fed up of eating turkey twice between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Most people who don’t like it will tell you it’s because of the food. Comedian Jim Gaffigan is one of them. As he revealed to Jimmy Kimmel this week, as a kid, he loved Thanksgiving but now, he cannot understand what all the fuss is about with the traditional centerpiece dish of the dinner table.
What the big deal with turkey?
“Y’know, Thanksgiving was such a great experience growing up. My mom would cook, and then maybe I would stir the gravy. But, y’know I love Thanksgiving, the holiday, but let’s be real, turkey is kinda garbage!" Gaffigan confessed. And he’s got a point which many others would agree with - it’s bland, it’s dry, it’s tasteless...
He underlined his argument: “Nobody goes out to dinner and is like, ‘What are you getting? I’m getting the steak’, ‘What are you getting? I’m getting the turkey...’ No one! I mean, people say the turkey is a little dry but anything that requires that much gravy... You know what I mean? It’s... y’know I love a turkey sandwich. I do, but us having turkey at Thanksgiving, I think, someone might have well have announced: ‘Hey, we’re gonna have egg salad sandwiches’ It’s not that different.
“People are so desperate to make the turkey interesting - you know, you see videos of people dropping it into boiling oil. It’s turkey! It’s not gonna turn into a fillet y’know!” he continued. “It just seems that people are that desperate to make turkey interesting right?"
