‘Stranger Things’ animated series ordered at Netflix

The hit series will now be developed into an animated series.

Update:
The hit series will now be developed into an animated series.

Netflix is expanding the ‘Stranger Things’ franchise. The streaming service ordered an animated series set within the same world as the original show.

Little details about the show have been revealed aside from some production credits. The series will be developed by Eric Robles and Flying Bark Productions. Robles previously produced the animated shows ‘Random! Cartoons,’ ‘Fanboy & Chum Chum,’ and ‘Glitch Techs.’

‘Stranger Things’ creators the Duffer Brothers will executive produce through Upside Down Pictures, along with Robles of Flying Bark as well as Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps. Upside Down Pictures and 21 Laps are currently under overall deals at Netflix.

“We’ve always dreamed of an animated ‘Stranger Things’ in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling,” the Duffer brothers said in a statement.

The statement continues, “We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with — the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…”

Stranger Things’ Success

‘Stranger Things’ has proven to be a global success and one of Netflix’s most successful original series. The series initially debuted in 2016 and was renewed for a fifth and final season in February 2022.

In 2022, ‘Stranger Things’ was the most streamed TV Show on Netflix. Within the season’s first 28 days of release, it gathered 1.35 billion hours worldwide of viewing time.

Netflix also announced plans for a live-action spinoff series and a stage show earlier in July of 2022. Although limited details have been revealed about the spin-off, Duffers have previously said it would not focus on characters like Eleven or Steve Harrington.

It was revealed in March 2023 that the stage show would take place in Hawkins in 1959 and would debut in London’s West End.

When does the final season of ‘Stranger Things’ premiere?

The fifth season of ‘Stranger Things’ is set to begin filming in May/June of 2023. Depending on the length of production, the final season is expected to air in late 2024.

Little details are known so far about the upcoming season. However, the season five storyline is reported to take place entirely in Hawkins with Will Byers as the main focus.
