Stranger Things was most streamed TV show in 2022
The most popular television series in 2022 was ‘Stranger Things’ according to both Netflix and Neilson streaming charts.
The hit sci-fi show ‘Stranger Things’ was streamed for a whopping 52 billion minutes in 2022, with Netflix and Neilson reporting the series as their most viewed English television series.
The show premiered the first seven episodes of its fourth season on May 27 on Netflix, and rounded out the season with two more installments on July 1.
‘Stranger Things’ is set in the 1980s and follows the residents of a fictional small town as they face an eerie alternate dimension, and the numbers certainly underline its success with fans.
In an article by Variety, Netflix reported ‘Stranger Things Season 4′ was the most-streamed show on its platform in 2022. The series pulled in 1.35 billion hours watched worldwide within the first 28-day period of its release, followed by ‘Wednesday’ with 1.24 billion hours watched.
In addition to being the top-streamed show on Netflix in 2022, ‘Stranger Things’ scored the same acclaim on the Neilson charts, along with the highest number of streams since the 2020 wave of people who tuned into ‘The Office’ — which had the most pandemic streams with more than 57 billion views. The difference in views might be attributed to the volume of episodes, as ‘The Office’ has 192, and ‘Stranger Things’ has only 34.
To put viewership in perspective, “Americans streamed more than 19.4 million years of content last year, up 27% about 15 million years in 2021,” according to the Variety report on Neilson.
Other content that drew substantial attention are older television shows like ‘NCIS’, with 38.1 billion minutes viewed on Netflix, children’s show ‘CoComelon’, with 37.8 billion Netflix minutes viewed, and Netflix original ‘Ozark’, with 2.6 billion minutes viewed.
Top-streamed movies
As for movies, children’s musical ‘Encanto’, streamed by Disney+ and launched in late 2021, landed the honor of most-watched film in 2022 with 27.4 billion minutes viewed. The animated hit placed fifth on the Top 15 list, and was the only movie to make the list, which includes both television series and movies.
Following close behind on the list of most-streamed movies of 2022 is Pixar’s ‘Turning Red’, Walt Disney’s ‘Moana’, and ‘Sing 2′ and ‘The Adam Project’ by Netflix.
