Canadian pop-punk band Sum 41 have announced they will be disbanding after spending the last 27 years together.

The band made the announcement via their social media account, adding that their upcoming ninth studio album, ‘Heavan and Hell’, will be their final release.

“‘Being in Sum 41 since 1996 brought us some of the best moments of our lives,” the band wrote. “We are forever grateful to our fans both old and new, who have supported us in every way. It is hard to articulate the love and respect we have for all of you and we wanted you to hear this from us first.

Sum 41 will be disbanding. We will still be finishing all of our current tour dates this year, and we’re looking forward to releasing our final album ‘Heaven :x: Hell,’ along with a final worldwide headlining tour to celebrate. Details will be announced as soon as we have them.

“For now, we look forward to seeing all of you skumf**s on the road and are excited for what the future will bring for each of us.”

Sum 41 history

Sum 41 were first called Kaspir and formed in Ajax, Ontario back in 1996.

The band, which is currently made up of frontman Deryck Whibley, Dave Baksh, Jason McCaslin, Tom Thacker and Frank Zummo, actually began as NOFX cover band.

Only Whibley remains from the original lineup.

They gained notoriety in the early 2000s thanks to their pop-punk sound which featured traces of heavy metal.

Their debut album, ‘All Killer No Filler’, was a commercial success and features hits like ‘Fat Lip’, ‘Motivation’ and ‘In Too Deep’. It would go on to become certified platinum in the United States and United Kingdom, as well as three-times platinum in Canada.

Sum 41 continued to find success after that thanks to ‘Does This Look Infected?’ (2002), ‘Chuck’ (2004) and ‘Underclass Hero’ (2007).

Their most well-known lineup featured Whibley, Baksh, McCaslin and former drummer-vocalist Steve Jocz, who left the band back in 2013.
