Michelob ULTRA unveiled two new commercials at the 2023 Super Bowl event. Both of them are set at Bushwood Country Club, a fictional country club from the movie ‘Caddyshack’. The advertisements star an array of celebrities.

The ad, which is a spoof on the 1980 American sports comedy directed by Harold Ramis, depicted an intense golf match between tennis all-star Serena Williams and actor Brian Cox.

Caddyshack Spoof

The ad starts with Serena Williams, wearing a purple and plaid golfing set, walking to the hole ready to show off her drive.

The commercial then takes a chaotic turn and features several other celebrity and professional athlete appearances including former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, soccer player Alex Morgan and boxer Canelo Alvarez.

As well as, Golfer Rickie Fowler, Jimmy Butler of the NBA’s Miami Heat, Nneka Ogumike of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, and finally Academy Award nominated actor Michael O’Keefe.

The ad features various uses of Michelob ULTRA throughout and ends with Serena Williams just getting her last putt in and getting the ball successfully into the hole thanks to a large flock of birds taking off and shaking the ground.

Similar to how Caddyshack ends, except in the movie it’s a large explosive that ends the game and gets the ball successfully into the hole.

Representation in Commercials

Director Rachel Morrison aimed to portray an equal representation of both male and female athletes in the commercial. The message of equality resonated deeply with Canelo Álvarez, the professional Mexican boxer.

“I have two daughters,” Álvarez told USA Today, “so it’s very important to help women and show the people they can be the same.”

Though it’s not just gender equality that Álvarez thinks it important to feature in his commercials. Golf is predominantly played by white men and Álvarez, a native of Guadalajara, Mexico, wanted to increase the presence of Latino and Hispanic players that we see on screen. “To be in this commercial about golf, it’s very important to me because I’m a Latino. So this is very special,” he said.
