Taylor Swift’s recorded music generated huge returns in 2022

The singer won the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year for the third year in a row.

The number of awards given to Taylor Swift doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. The ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ singer has once again won IFPI’s Global Recording Artist of the Year award for 2022, the third time she has won the award.

The IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) award recognizes an artist or group’s success in digital and physical media formats, from streams to vinyls sold.

Swift topped the IFPI’s list of 20 artists that make up its Global Recording Artist Chart for 2022.

This chart, according to IFPI, is “the only [global] ranking to accurately measure consumption across all formats (including streaming formats, digital and physical album and singles sales) and all countries”.

“It is a great pleasure to award the IFPI Global Recording Artist Award to Taylor Swift for an unprecedented third time in the chart’s ten-year history,” said Frances Moore the Chief Executive of IFPI.

“Taylor is a truly magnificent international star, who continues to grow and evolve as an artist whilst maintaining an incredibly strong connection with her fans around the world.”

The success of Swift’s latest album ‘Midnights’

Swift’s latest album, ‘Midnights’ was released last October, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200. The album spent five weeks there, while also topping charts around the world, including the number one spot in the United Kingdom for five weeks.

Since then, the album has sold over 6 million album equivalents, a measurement of unit used by the music industry to compare songs downloaded and songs streamed to physical album sales.

Despite being outperformed in terms of the number of streams by other albums, such as Bad Bunny’s ‘Un Verano Sin Ti’, Swift’s decade-long catalog is what put her at the top, with IFPI taking an artist’s entire catalog into account when making their lists.

Who else nabbed a spot on IFPI’s 2022 Global Recording Artist chart?

The IFPI’s list reveals the artists who generated the most money last year globally across streaming, download and physical record sales in 2022.

Following Swift, Korean boy band BTS came in at number two, making their fifth appearance in the IFPI Global Artist Chart since 2018. It was also their fourth time in the top two spots.

Next was Canadian artist Drake, who has been on the chart’s top ten since 2015 and came in at number one on two separate occasions, the first time in 2016 and his second time in 2018.
