The 2024 AS USA Christmas sports gift guide
It’s the most wonderful time of the year as our annual gift guide for the sports fanatic in your life is here.
25 December is just around the corner and as tradition now dictates, we’ve been busy compiling our 2024 sports Christmas guide and as always, we’ve endeavoured to cover a series of items from a range of sports to suit every budget.
1) The Racket: Conor Niland
We kick off this year’s list with a book! Remember them, this however is no ordinary run of the mill publication. This is the winner of the prestigious William Hill Sports Book of 2024.
The Racket details the story of pro tennis’s 99%: the players who roam the globe in hope of climbing the rankings and squeaking into the Grand Slam tournaments. It brings us into a world where a few dozen super-rich players, travelling with coaches and physios, share a stage with lonely touring pros whose earnings barely cover their expenses, all wonderfully told by former Irish tennis pro Niland.

The 2024 NBA season “City” jerseys from Nike have dropped and as always, it’s a mixed bag with some of the jerseys rather bland and uninspiring.
That doesn’t apply to the effort for the resurgent Detroit Pistons with an eye-catching cream jersey with a sleek Pistons logo and all set off with orange accents that compliment the cream to perfection.

We simply don’t read enough these days with too much time with our heads spent glued to a screen. To remedy this, we open and close our 2024 selection with another book. In States of Play, journalist Delaney asks the question: ‘who owns football’ and attempts to explore the direction the game is taking and how the sport has been taken over by the world’s wealthiest businessmen, state-backed corporations, media tycoons and oil-rich oligarchs.
