‘The Batman Part II’ gets official release date
It was also confirmed that Matt Reeves’ Batman will be getting its own trilogy.
Robert Pattinson will return as the Caped Crusader when ‘The Batman - Part II’ hits theatres on October 3, 2025.
The film is the sequel to the 2022 hit that was theatrically released worldwide on March 4. Directed by Matt Reeves, the movie was a hit with audiences, grossing over $770 million to make it the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2022.
Although a plot synopsis hasn’t been released, DC Studios duo James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed the movie will be part of a trilogy.
“Matt is working on [The Batman - Part II], which he thinks of as a Batman crime saga, which also includes the Penguin TV series,” Gunn explained. “And it is its own thing and he’s hard at work on that.
“He came in and pitched us some amazing, really cool stuff the other day. So our plan is for that to continue.”
The Batman will remain a standalone property
The announcement was made as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s plans for the new DC Universe, which announced 10 film and TV titles.
The upcoming Batman project will exist separately from the DCU’s version, but Safran made it clear they are still invested in the success of the project.
“And Batman’s not a stepchild. I mean, it’s all under DC,” Safran added. “We are fully invested in the success of the Batman, just like we are everything else.”
Pattinson as Batman
Although Batfans were initially skeptical about the decision to cast Pattinson as Batman, the movie’s success and the announcement of a sequel shows that he is here to stay as the Caped Crusader for the time being.
He’s the ninth actor to have played Batman on the big screen since the 1960s. The first was Adam West in the 1966 spin-off from the television series of the same name. Unlike Pattinson’s film, the movie was a somewhat lighter character than the one from the comics.
Michael Keaton starred in Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) in what was a watershed moment in DC Comics history. Gone was West’s campy take on the character, with Tim Burton’s reinvention somewhat radical for the time.
Kevin Conroy’s 1993 film ‘Batman: Mask of the Phantasm’ went largely unnoticed by movie-goers, while Val Kilmer and George Clooney played the role once each, but their movies weren’t well received.
Christian Bale played Batman in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy of films, which reestablished the Caped Crusader as one of DC’s most popular heroes.
Ben Affleck appeared in four movies in Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe before leaving the role, while Will Arnett lent his voice to Batman in the 2017 hit ‘The Lego Batman Movie’.
