The first 10 film and TV titles of the rebooted DC Universe
The first chapter of the DCU, called “Gods and Monsters”, has been unveiled.
James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced the first 10 film and TV titles of the rebooted DC Universe.
The duo met with the press to present what they care calling Chapter 1 of the DCU, “Gods and Monsters”, as they begin their work running the newly created DC Studios within Warner Bros. Discovery.
The titles cover a wide range of superheroes, with Safran stating the DCU exists as a multiverse, but that the titles will exist in one singular universe.
They added that the plan is to release roughly two films and two TV series per year into the DCU, with the projects set to run through 2027.
Here’s a breakdown of the projects so far.
Movies
‘Superman: Legacy’
One of two projects with a release date, ‘Superman: Legacy’ will mark the start of the DCU when it opens on July 11, 2025.
Gunn is writing the project, though Safran stated it will not be an origin story for the Man of Steel.
“It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing,” said Safran.
‘The Authority’
Based on the comic by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, the ensemble movie will be about superhumans who are less than idealistic about how to save the world.
The characters are from Wildstorm, an independent entity that was launched in 1992, and were later folded into the main DC comics universe when the company rebooted in 2011.
Gunn added that the film is being written, but declined to say who the screenwriter was.
‘The Brave and the Bold’
Robert Pattinson’s version of Batman will exist separately from the DCU’s version, with ‘The Brave and the Bold’ introducing fans to “the Bat family.”
This movie will mark the return of Robin, who hasn’t appeared in a live-action movie since 1997′s ‘Batman and Robin’.
This version is Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s biological son, a fact unknown to him for the first eight to 10 years of Damian’s life.
‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’
‘Woman of Tomorrow’ will focus on the comic run of the same title from 2021 and 2022, and feature Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El.
Gunn explained that unlike Superman, who was raised by loving parents on Earth, this version of Supergirl “watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life.”
“Swamp Thing’
Gunn said that this movie will investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing.
“This is a much more horrific film, but we’ll still have Swamp Thing interact with the other characters,” he added.
Television
‘Creature Commandos’
Already in production, the animated series will run on HBO Max.
Gunn’s version won’t take the same approach as the characters that launched in 1980, which featured Frankenstein’s monster teaming up with a werewolf, a vampire and a gorgon to fight Nazis in World War II.
‘Waller’
With Gunn focused on ‘Superman: Legacy’, Season 2 of ‘Peacemaker’ has been put on hold.
Instead, ‘Waller’ will be a continuation of that show and be executive produced by Jeremy Carver.
‘Lanterns’
Separate from the Green Lantern series that is no longer moving forward on HBO Max, this show is described as being like “in the vein of ‘True Detective’.”
The show will focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart of the Green Lantern corps as they investigate a mystery.
‘Paradise Lost’
Set on the island of Themyscira before the birth of Wonder Woman, the show’s title recalls the ‘Paradise Islad Lost’ comic series by Phil Jimenez and George Perez.
‘Booster Gold’
An outright comedy, Booster is “a loser from the future who uses basic future technology to come back to today and pretend to be a superhero.”
