2023 Oscars
The luckiest colors to wear at the Oscars
Oscar nominees might have a better chance of winning if they wear certain colors
As the world anticipates who the 2023 Oscar winners will be, there may be a new secret to success for this year’s nominees. A new study suggests that black may be the luckiest color to wear to the Oscars.
If nominees want the best chance at taking home an award, wearing black on the red carpet may increase their chances considerably. According to a study done by Dalston Mills Fabrics, 32 percent of actresses nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories wore black.
“From extravagant ballgowns to little black dresses, wearing black is a fashion classic that has evidently stood the test of time,” Dalston Mills Fabrics commented alongside their report.
Iconic Oscars winners who wore black when accepting the award
Since the Oscars’ inception in 1929, many stars and celebrities donned black at the event, and a notable few had their monochromatic looks become key moments in awards show fashion.
In 1988, actress and singer Cher wore a black sheer gown designed by Bob Mackie when accepting her Best Actress award for her performance in ‘Moonstruck’. Her outfit went on to become a legendary Oscars look.
More recently, actress Frances McDormand made headlines with her sleek all-black ensemble at the 2021 Oscars. She wore Valentino whilst accepting the award for Best Actress in ‘Nomadland’.
Oscars celebrities take home the gold and wear it too
Even though black may be the luckiest color for female actresses and nominees to wear at the Oscars red carpet, many celebrities might opt for something a bit more bold and colorful instead.
According to Dalston Mills Fabric’s study, gold is statistically the second luckiest color to wear. Throughout history, 13 percent of women winners wore gold at the event.
In 2017, ‘La La Land’ actress Emma Stone wore a shimmering gold Givenchy Haute Couture dress designed by Riccardo Tisci as she accepted her award for Best Actress. Fans praised her look’s nod to 1920s Hollywood glamor.
