This year marks the 95th edition of the Academy Awards, and safe to say, there has been no shortage of shocking moments at the ceremony over the years.

From unexpected kisses and slaps, to wrongly awarded trophies, here’s a look at some of the most unexpected and shocking moments in Oscars history.

Adrien Brody kisses Halle Berry

Adrien Brody took home Best Actor in 2003 for his work in ‘The Pianist’, but it’s what happened after that had people talking.

The award was presented by Halle Berry, who took home Best Actress the year before for her performance in ‘Monster’s Ball’.

After stepping on stage, Brody decided to embrace Berry once she had given him the award. Rather than give her a quick hug, Brody bent her backwards and passionately kissed her.

Berry later said that the moment was unplanned, and that she “just f***ing went with it” despite being shocked.

Marlon Brando refuses to accept his Oscar

Despite winning Best Actor for his role in ‘The Godfather’ in 1973, Brando declined the award.

Instead, Native American activist Sacheen Littlefeather attended in his place. When she took the stage in his place following his win, presenter Roger Moore tried to hand her the Oscar, but she brushed it aside.

Littlefeather stated that the actor “very regretfully” could not accept the award, as he was protesting Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans in film.

Angelina Jolie shares intimate moment with her brother

Just 24 at the time, Angelina Jolie was up for Best Supporting Actress at the 2000 Oscars for her role in ‘Girl, Interrupted’.

She attended the awards with her brother, James Haven, and when she took the stage after winning, she thanked Haven.

“I’m in shock, and I’m so in love with my brother right now,” she said, followed by a nervous laugh. “He just held me and said he loved me, and I know he’s so happy for me. And, um, thank you for that.”

Later in the night the two were spotted sharing a kiss on the lips, which made headlines, and followed them for years.

“I did not give Angie a French kiss. It was something simple and lovely,” Haven told the Daily Mail in March 2007.

‘La La Land’ erroneously awarded Best Picture

You’d be hard pressed to come up with a bigger mistake in Oscars history. For over two minutes in 2017, ‘La La Land’ and its team thought that the film had taken home the award for Best Picture, before four famous word were said: “There’s been a mistake.”

Producer Jordan Horowitz informed the stunned crowd that ‘Moonlight’ had actually won after a mistake by accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, who mistakenly handed presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty the wrong envelope.

Will Smith slaps Chris Rock

Any list without the incident known as ‘Slapgate’ would be incomplete.

While presenting an award at the 2022 Oscars, Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head, stating he couldn’t wait to see her in ‘G.I. Jane 2′. The 1997 movie starred Demi Moore, who famously shaved her head for the role.

That prompted Pinkett Smith’s husband, Will Smith, to get up on stage and slap Rock, before returning to his seat and shouting: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.”

Onlookers watched on in stunned silence as it quickly became clear that it wasn’t a bit. Chris Rock kept his cool as well, before recently taking aim at Smith during his Netflix special, ‘Chris Rock: Selective Outrage’.
