Update:

Echoes of Survivors: Inside Korea’s Tragedies is a recently released Netflix documentary series that delves into four significant and harrowing incidents from South Korea’s recent history. The series is a follow-up to the 2023 docuseries In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal and, like its predecessor, uses firsthand accounts and a survivor-centered approach to tell its stories.

The series focuses on the following events:

Busan’s Brothers’ Home: It examines the brutal history of Brothers Home, a “welfare facility” that operated as an internment camp from 1975 to 1987. The series highlights the stories of survivors who were kidnapped off the streets and subjected to violence, forced labor, and abuse.

JMS Church: The documentary provides a follow-up to the legal cases related to the Christian Gospel Mission (JMS) cult, which was the focus of the first season.

Chijon Family Gang Murders: The series covers the murders committed by a notorious gang known as the “Chijon family.”

Sampoong Department Store Collapse: It recounts the catastrophic collapse of the Sampoong Department Store, one of South Korea’s deadliest modern disasters.

Through interviews with survivors, witnesses, and archival footage, the series explores not just the events themselves, but also the lasting trauma and the resilience of those who lived through them. It aims to amplify voices that have been unheard and reframe public memory through personal truths.
