Chris Carter, creator of the classic 90s sci-fi series ‘The X-Files’ has revealed a big piece of information about his franchise. In a recent interview with the CBC radio show ‘On the Coast With Gloria Macarenko’, Carter revealed a reboot is in the works.

At the helm of the upcoming reboot is ‘Black Panther’ director Ryan Coogler, who is aiming to bring back the world of ‘The X-Files’ with a more diverse cast.

A more diverse cast for ‘The X-Files’

“I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast,” Carter said on the radio show. The episode marked the 30th anniversary since the series began filming in the Canadian city of Vancouver.

“[Coogler] has his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory,” he added.

Carter noted that any reboot of the series will find itself covering more topics that revolve around conspiracy theories than the original series did, with Carter saying that the modern world and modern TV shows are “steeped in conspiracy theories” that have grown since the 90s.

The prospective new series is still in its early stages, so no word has been made on what networks or platforms will host the reboot. Although the original series aired on Fox, it’s unlikely that the series will air on Fox, but instead on Hulu, after Disney acquired 20th TV, the series’ original studio. Disney owns a stake in Hulu.

The original series, starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, aired on Fox between 1993 and 2001 and was revived for an additional two seasons in 2016 and 2018. The series followed the two FBI agents as they investigated cases of the paranormal, including extraterrestrial situations, mythological creatures, and other supernatural activity.

Coogler’s upcoming work on the ‘X-Files’ will be developed under the five-year deal he made with Disney with his Proximity Media company. The deal allows the company to develop and produce series for Disney and its outlets.

Proximity Media is currently developing a series set in the Wakanda universe for Disney+.
