These rising stars were left out of the final ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ - here’s why
The director of the slasher reboot says the decision to cut the actors’ scene “sucks”, but was a necessary one.
The new I Know What You Did Last Summer was due to feature Lola Tung and Nicholas Alexander Chavez - but the pair were cut in post-production as their scene “doesn’t fit” the rest of the film, its director says.
Tung and Chavez’s absence from the final reel “sucks”, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson told People magazine this week, insisting that the decision to leave the actors’ appearance out was not a reflection on their performances.
Tung, best known for her role in The Summer I turned Pretty, and Chavez, who played Lyle Menendez in The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, filmed a single scene that was to feature at the beginning of the slasher reboot.
“You don’t want to do that to those actors”
“In every movie, it’s best laid plans,” Kaytin Robinson revealed to People. “And then you edit the movie and you put it together and you go, ‘I love this in a vacuum. This is a fantastic scene. But it doesn’t fit in the movie.'
“It was just one of those situations where it had nothing to do with Lola and Nicholas - they are both so fantastic. I really would love to work with them again. I loved working with them. They did a fabulous job.
“But in the larger tapestry of the film, it just didn’t fit.”
Kaytin Robinson added: “It sucks because you don’t want to do that to those actors. And it sucks when you love something as a scene but that scene just doesn’t work in the final cut of the film.”

Starring Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers and Sarah Pidgeon, I Know What You Did Last Summer also features Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt, who both appeared in 1997’s original I Know What You Did Last Summer and the following year’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
The fourth film in the franchise, this year’s I Know What You Did Last Summer serves as a sequel to the 1998 film.

The new film is to be released in movie theaters in the U.S. on Friday, July 18, 2025.
