This horror classic was named “the scariest movie ever according to science” and now it might be back
It’s a movie that has consistently topped a ranking of history’s most frightening films - and its director is open to making another.

A 2012 movie dubbed the “scariest horror film of all time” may be about to get another sequel, according to its director.
“Science of Scare” chart-topper
A picture starring four-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke, Sinister has repeatedly been named cinema’s most frightening movie in an annual study carried out by the consumer advice site MoneySuperMarket.com.
Known as the “Science of Scare” ranking, the chart is compiled by measuring viewers’ heart rates during a series of screenings of prominent horror movies.
Sinister, a film about a true-crime writer who finds a box of snuff movies in his new home, topped the very first “Science of Scare” chart in 2020, ahead of 2010’s Insidious and 2013’s The Conjuring.
Although Sinister was then overtaken by the 2020 film Host in 2021 and 2022, it returned to top spot in 2023 and remained there last year.
2015 Sinister follow-up fails to convince
In 2015, James Ransone starred in a Sinister sequel, Sinister 2, which was neither commercially nor critically as successful as the first film.
Now, a third instalment in the franchise could be on the way, according to Scott Derrickson, who co-wrote both previous films and directed the first.
“I would love to see that happen”
“Yeah, we’ve actually been speaking about [making Sinister 3],” Derrickson told a recent interview with JOE.
“I think that we really dropped the ball on Sinister 2. I take responsibility for that. I think that there were some problems with that screenplay that we wrote.
“It didn’t have the mystery or the intensity of the first movie.
“But we’re hoping to make a Sinister 3 eventually and revive that franchise. I would love to see that happen.”
