This is Emmy host Nate Bargatze’s plan to keep winners’ speeches short at the award ceremony

At this weekend’s Primetime Emmy Awards, award winners will be under financial pressure to keep their acceptance speeches brief.

Update:

Host Nate Bargatze says he’s hatched a plan to discourage award recipients from delivering excessively long acceptance speeches at the Primetime Emmys.

In an appearance on the chat show Jimmel Kimmel Live, Bargatze revealed that he’ll be making a charitable donation after this weekend’s TV awards show. Crucially, however, the size of the check he cuts will depend on the brevity of Emmy winners’ speeches.

“We take away $1,000 a second”

Everybody gets 45 seconds to do all their thank-yous,” the comedian explained.

So I’m going to donate $100,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs - that’s [the amount] where the show’s starting at. If someone goes over, we take away $1,000 a second every time they go over. I know, it’s tough.

“But if you go under, we will put $1,000 [a second] back on.”

Asked if he has considered how much his plan could end up costing him, Bargatze said: “I mean, I don’t even want to. It could cost a good bit. It could get wild.”

The 46-year-old, who is hosting the Emmys for the first time in his career, quipped: “The [speeches] that go long, that’s fine. If you could get me down to like ten grand, I’ll be like, all right!”

An organization founded in the mid-19th century, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America offers after-school programs to young people across the U.S.

Bargatze noted that beneficiaries of the charity will be in attendance at the Emmys. That means award winners who exceed the 45-second time limit “are going to have to look them in the face”, he warned.

When are the 2025 Emmys? How can I watch?

The 77th edition of the ceremony, the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards take place on Sunday, September 14, at the Peacock Theater in L.A., California.

Scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT, the gala is to air on CBS. Subscribers to Paramount+ with Showtime will be able to stream the Emmys live, while Paramount+ Essential subscribers can stream it on demand the following day.

You also have the option of streaming CBS on the online platform fubo, which offers new users a free, introductory trial.

HBO’s The White Lotus and Apple TV’s Severance lead the major-award nominations at this weekend’s Emmys, with 10 nods for each series.
