2025 marks 30 years since the release of ‘Showgirls’, the controversial 1995 film that garnered a vehement fan response but poor box office results. The film’s star, Elizabeth Berkley, portrayed Nomi Malone, an ambitious young woman who traveled to Las Vegas in a bid to become a showgirl.

Berkley was 22 at the time of the film’s release, making it her first major appearance in a movie. Showgirls received huge amount of media attention for its use of nudity and sex, sparking a conversation about the role of eroticism in Hollywood.

The film was widely panned and was ranked No. 6 in Far Out magazine’s list of 10 movies so irredeemably bad they demand to be seen. Berkley’s performance was also criticised but it did help to make her a household name and she has gone on to enjoy a successful career as an actress.

After Showgirls, Berkley went on to play supporting roles in a number of well-known, better-received Hollywood movies. She played Phoebe LaVelle in 'The First Wives Club' and Mandy Murphy in Oliver Stone‘s iconic sports drama ’Any Given Sunday‘. She also featured in in Woody Allen‘s period comedy ’The Curse of the Jade Scorpion' and later ‘Roger Dodger’, which was awarded Best Narrative Feature at the inaugural Tribeca Festival.

Last year a crowd of 1,200 die-hard fans watched Showgirls at a screening at the Academy Museum’s David Geffen Theater. Berkley appeared to address the audience and gave thanks to those who had supported the film.

In her remarks Berkley said that the film had “really pushed the boundaries at that time that now have been embraced — not misunderstood but truly embraced. And I’m so grateful that the film has found its way not only in your hearts but especially the LGBTQ community.”

“You stood by the film,” she continue, wiping a tear from her eye. “You always believed, as did I, and for that I’m eternally grateful.
