Tom Holland opens up about his sobriety journey

The 26-year-old actor reveals he’s over one year sober in a recent interview.

Update:

Tom Holland is no stranger to using his platform to bring light to important topics, this time it’s the fact that he’s celebrating over a year of sobriety.

While doing press for his upcoming TV series ‘The Crowded Room’ the 26-year-old actor revealed that he has now been sober for one year and four months.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Holland explained that when playing his latest character, he was able to push himself to look further into his own mental health.

“Learning about mental health and the power of it, and speaking to psychiatrists about [the characters] Danny and Billy’s struggles, has been something that has been so informative to my own life,” Holland said. “I’ve become better at recognizing triggers and stressors, such as social media.”

Holland has to distance himself from his characters.

Although this role played had a positive impact on his life, other roles can sometimes take a toll on the actor.

“I’m no stranger to the physical aspects of the job doing the whole action-movie thing,” the ‘Spider-Man’ actor explained. “But the mental aspect, it really beat me up and it took a long time for me to recover afterwards, to sort of get back to reality,”

“I was seeing myself in him (Peter Parker), but in my personal life, I remember having a bit of a meltdown at home and thinking, like, ‘I’m going to shave my head. I need to shave my head because I need to get rid of this character.’”

“And, obviously, we were mid-shooting, so I decided not to. … It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before.”
