Tori Spelling files for divorce from Dean McDermott after 18 years of marriage
The celebrity couple had been married for 18 years but announced their separation this week citing irreconcilable differences.
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott’s love story has come to an end. This week Spelling, best known from shows like ‘Beverly Hills’ and ‘90210′, has filed for divorce from the Canadian television prresentor. The couple have reportedly been separated for nine months.
According to court documents obtained by People, the reality TV star cited irreconcilable differences as the reason behind their separation. The official date of separation was listed as June 17, 2023.
According to legal documents, Spelling asked the court to award her spousal support and requested sole physical custody of their five children: Liam Aaron McDermott, 17, Stella Doreen, 15, Hattie Margaret, 12, Finn Davey, 11, and Beau Dean, 7. She has requested that they share legal custody, with visitation rights for McDermott to be determined later.
It is not clear whether or not the former couple had a prenuptial agreement. Spelling has claimed that the value of of their respective properties has not yet been determined.
How did Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott meet?
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott first met in Ottawa, Canada in 2005. They were filming the television movie ‘Mind Over Murder’ and were both married to other people.
But in 2006, less than a month after Spelling finalized his divorce and McDermott separated from his wife, the two were married in a private ceremony in Fiji. A year later they welcomed their first child, Liam. In 2008, their first daughter, Stella, was born.
After a whirlwind romance the couple renewed their vows on May 8, 2010 but four years later McDermott publicly admitted to having had an affair. The couple were able to get their marriage back on track and they remained together for nine more years before announcing their separation in 2023. The couple confirmed the news in an Instagram post.
“It is with great sadness and a very heavy heart that after 18 years together and 5 incredible children, Tori Spelling and I have decided to go our separate ways and begin a new journey of our own,” it read. The post has subsequently been deleted but both Spelling and McDermott have spoken about each other favourably in public since announcing their separation.
