Described as a “hybrid docu-concert”, a forthcoming film looks back at the formation and rise of Led Zeppelin, the British rock band responsible for major 1970s hits such as “Whole Lotta Love” and “Stairway to Heaven”.

Directed by Bernard MacMahon, Becoming Led Zeppelin will initially be released next month only in IMAX cinemas, before a larger-scale release across conventional theaters a week later.

“Told in Led Zeppelin’s own words”

Powered by awe-inspiring, psychedelic, never-before-seen footage, performances, and music, Bernard MacMahon’s experiential cinematic odyssey explores Led Zeppelin’s creative, musical, and personal origin story,” says the film’s distributor, Sony Pictures Classics.

“The film is told in Led Zeppelin’s own words and is the first officially sanctioned film on the group.”

When is Becoming Led Zeppelin released in the US?

Becoming Led Zeppelin is due out in IMAX theaters on Friday, February 7, 2025. The film will then be released in regular cinemas on Friday, February 14.

“An immersive and transportive viewing experience”

Per Variety, MacMahon said in a statement last month: “The cinematic power of IMAX paired with the film’s authentic sound creates an immersive and transportive viewing experience letting audiences feel like they are there, in the venues with the band."

Writer-producer Allison McGourty added: “We spent five years flying back and forth across the Atlantic scouring attics and basements in pursuit of rare and unseen film footage, photographs and music recordings.”

In 2021, a work-in-progress version of Becoming Led Zeppelin was shown at the Venice Film Festival, receiving a 10-minute standing ovation.
