Unreleased Prince tracks to debut at annual ‘Celebration’ event at Paisley Park
Prince’s Paisley Park annual ‘Celebration’ event will also host a number of guest stars.
Prince’s Paisley Park estate, where the pop legend both lived and recorded a number of hit albums beginning with 1985’s ‘Around the World in a Day’, is also the site of the now-annual ‘Celebration’ event that began in the 2000s as a way for the artist to more personally connect with his fans.
The ‘Celebration’ shows have continued even after his death in 2016. After over 10 years of no shows, ‘Celebration’ returned in 2017, giving fans an opportunity to remember Prince.
For the 2023 series of shows, fans are going to be given another treasure trove of unreleased tracks in Prince’s catalog.
A focus on the number seven
It has not yet been revealed what the unreleased tracks will be, nor from what era of Prince’s career they’ll be pulled from. But organizers have dropped a hint that this year’s theme is related to the number 7, a number that Prince was fascinated by, releasing the song ‘7′ in 1992. He was also born on June 7, 1958.
“This year marks 7 years of uplifting Prince’s legacy and carefully preserving his prolific artistic output and his creative sanctuary,” read an official statement from Paisley Park.
“At Celebration 2023, guests will take a deep dive into understanding the cultural significance of 7 and how it has been reflected throughout history.”
“For me personally, as one of the heirs, I can’t speak for all of them, I don’t mind if people hear the small stuff — the little stuff where he’s just sitting there playing with the piano and how he put it together,” Prince’s sister Tyka Nelson told Rolling Stone in 2021.
“That might teach some little boy that wants to learn how to put a song together. We never know. Anything and everything, get it out there. If I live 100, 200 years, I would definitely be there helping to oversee getting it out. But Prince’s music will outlive me for sure,” she added.
When and where will the 2023 ‘Celebration’ show take place?
The 2023 ‘Celebration’ shows will take place from June 8 to 11 at the Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
Guests at the shows will be split into two groups, the “Diamonds” and “Pearls”, for their tour around the 65,000-square-foot estate.
A series of talks will be hosted by Public Enemy’s Chuck D, Chaka Khan, D-Nice, and Doug E. Fresh.
Performing at the shows will be Sounds of Blackness and The Steeles, a Minnesota gospel group, Stokley Williams from Mint Condition, D-Nice, DJ Rashida, members of Prince’s band New Power Generation, his backup singer Shelby J, and the Minnesota youth choir Known MPLS.
