Upcoming Quentin Tarantino movie may be his last
The ‘Pulp Fiction’ director’s latest script may be the last he’ll direct.
Prolific movie director Quentin Tarantino may have one final movie up his sleeve. It’s been reported that the director has finished writing a script for a movie that may very well be the last he’ll ever direct.
The director has previously stated he planned to stop directing once he made 10 movies, counting ‘Kill Bill, vol.1′ and ‘Kill Bill, vol. 2′ as one film. Having just released his ninth film, ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ in 2019, the end may be soon for Tarantino.
The new movie is speculatively called ‘The Movie Critic’, with sources saying filming is expected to begin in the fall.
A thirty-year-long career with nine hit movies
“I like the idea of a 10-film filmography, especially after I’ve given everything I have for the last thirty years and then dropping the mic, and saying that’s it,” Tarantino said backstage at the 77th Golden Globe Awards, where he picked up the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and Best Screenplay for ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’.
Tarantino has been working in film since 1987, directing amateur films and appearing as an Elvis impersonator in an episode of ‘The Golden Girls’, using the money he was paid to support ‘Reservoir Dogs’, his first feature film.
When the film was released in 1992, it became a hit, receiving an overwhelmingly positive response from critics. He then went on to sell his script for ‘Natural Born Killers’.
His second film ‘Pulp Fiction’ was released in 1994 becoming his first film to be nominated at both the Oscars and the Golden Globes, winning Best Original Screenplay at both awards shows. His subsequent films were all released to critical acclaim.
In 1997 ‘Jackie Brown’ was released, followed by ‘Kill Bill: Volume 1′ in 2003 and Volume 2 in 2004. In 2007, he released ‘Death Proof’, produced by Robert Rodriguez, who directed Tarantino’s screenplay ‘From Dusk till Dawn’.
He later directed ‘Inglourious Basterds’ in 2009, starring Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz, with Waltz winning an Oscar for his role as Hans Landa. ‘Django Unchained’ was released in 2012, followed by ‘The Hateful Eight’ in 2015, and ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, his latest film, in 2019.
What is ‘The Movie Critic’ about?
Quentin’s new and potentially final movie ‘The Movie Critic’ has few details released, but sources have told The Hollywood Reporter that the movie will have a female lead and be set in 1970s Los Angeles.
Judging by the script title and setting, it’s speculated that the film will revolve around Pauline Kael, a film critic who wrote for the New Yorker from 1968 to 1991. She was also a consultant at Paramount in the 1970s.
Kael was a fierce supporter of the New Hollywood movement, inspiring directors such as Wes Anderson, and Tarantino himself. Tarantino published a collection of essays inspired by Kael called ‘Cinema Speculation in 2022.
And while the movie may be his last, Tarantino has said after retiring from directing, he plans on continuing to work as a writer.
