‘Warcraft’ surges back: The 2016 box‑office flop is suddenly one of Netflix’s most‑watched movies
It flopped at the box office but a decade on, ‘Warcraft: The Beginning’ is now living an unexpected second life by sneaking into Netflix’s most-watched shows.
Streaming has rewritten the rules of movie success, and few films embody that second‑chance phenomenon better than Warcraft (2016). Once considered a major box‑office disappointment that derailed Blizzard’s ambitious franchise plans, the movie is now climbing Netflix’s U.S. charts — landing among the platform’s most‑watched titles.
New arrivals like Reptile, Renfield, and The Assistant are trailing behind it, while Warcraft currently sits at No. 6 in a Top 10 led by The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with Ask Me Anything and Collision rounding out the top three.
The likely explanation? According to a well‑known streaming theory, so few people saw Warcraft in theaters that millions are now discovering it for the first time.
What is ‘Warcraft’ about?
Based on Blizzard’s iconic video‑game universe, Warcraft was intended to launch a multi‑film saga.
The official synopsis sets the stage: “The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as it faces an invasion of orc warriors fleeing their dying world. When a portal opens between the two realms, one army faces destruction and the other extinction. Two heroes — one from each side — are destined to collide in a battle that will shape the fate of their families, their people, and their home.”
The film promised a sweeping epic of power, sacrifice, and the many faces of war — and for fans of the games, it delivered a visually rich dive into Azeroth.
Why did ‘Warcraft’ flop in theaters?
Released in 2016 with a massive $160 million production budget (not including marketing), Warcraft earned only $47 million in the U.S. — far below expectations.
But in China, the movie became a runaway hit, grossing $439 million and briefly holding the record as the country’s highest‑grossing foreign film. Even that wasn’t enough to convince Legendary to green‑light sequels.
Director Duncan Jones and Blizzard have repeatedly expressed interest in continuing the franchise, but as of now, a follow‑up isn’t in Legendary’s plans.
Who stars in ‘Warcraft’?
The cast includes several familiar faces:
- Travis Fimmel, best known as Ragnar in Vikings
- Clancy Brown (Highlander)
- Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes)
- Paula Patton (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol)
Their performances helped bring the sprawling world of Azeroth to life, even if the film’s theatrical run didn’t match its ambition.
