Britney Spears is once more making the headlines, this time because her third husband Sam Asghari is filing for divorce. The 29-year-old is asking that the singer pay him spousal support, and also that she cover his attorney’s fees.

Whenever there are high profile celebrity breakups, the issue of money inevitably comes to the fore. According to multiple publications, the two had a prenuptial agreement, so Asghari will likely not get a huge amount of the musician’s fortune. Even though Spears was in love when she got married, she tried to make sure that her assets were protected.

Spears was one of the biggest pop superstars of her generation. In 2002 she was one of the most successful musicians and most recognizable people in the world, having enjoyed a string of four platinum number one albums.

Her sell-out world tours netted her tens of millions of dollars and Forbes named her as the world’s most powerful celebrity, with an annual income of $40 million.

However, despite her massive success, in 2022 Forbes listed Britney Spears’ net worth at around $60 million- a very respectable total but far short of the real celebrity high-rollers.

To put the amount into perspective, Spears’ fellow musicians Rihanna, Beyoncé, and Taylor Swift recently made it to Forbes’ Richest Self-Made Women list, with Rihanna’s net worth reported to be $1.4 billion, Swift at $740 million, and Beyoncé recording $540 million. Compared to these numbers, Spears’ net worth appears rather small, especially considering her superstar stature.

Conservatorship saw Britney’s father put in charge of finances

Spears’ very turbulent private life has something to do with the state of her finances. After a very public meltdown in 2007, she was placed under a court-ordered conservatorship which named her father Jamie as the person in charge of her financial affairs. This was ostensibly a measure to help the singer, but in 2021 further details emerged regarding the benefits that Jamie derived from the situation.

In 2021, The New York Times reported that Jamie Spears was in receipt of a salary worth “about $16,000 per month, plus $2,000 a month for office space rent” from the conservatorship. He also received a proportion of the profits from Britney’s tours which she continued to do for years after first being placed into the conservatorship.

The Times reports: “In 2014, he was granted 1.5 percent of gross revenues from the performances and merchandising tied to her Las Vegas residency, ‘Piece of Me,’ which went on to earn a reported $138 million across nearly 250 shows.”

Jamie Spears reportedly netted around $6 million over the course of a 13-year conservatorship, before standing down in August 2021. In recent years the singer had began to fight back against the control exerted by the father, and a court finally ruled that the arrangement must end.

“The conservatorship of the person and estate of Britney Jean Spears is no longer required,” Judge Brenda Penny said in her ruling. “The conservatorship is hereby terminated.”

Britney Spears’ impending divorce might cost her money once more, especially if Asghari contests their prenup agreement. The divorce proceedings will eventually reveal if the singer will lose as much of her net worth to her husband as she did when her father was in control of her finances.
