Update:

Switzerland raced into an early lead during the voting in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, which led to plenty of screen time for singer Nemo, who ended up winning the trophy with “The Code” at Malmö Arena in Sweden.

What is a non-binary flag? Who does it represent?

After each of the Swiss’ numerous 12-point hauls, the rapper and singer was seen waving a flag with yellow, white, purple and black horizontal stripes. While we have become most familiar with the rainbow flag, which represents the entire LGBT community, Nemo had another pride flag in his possession, representing the non-binary community.

Non-binary people, for those not aware, are people who don’t identify exclusively as either male or female. They may identify as being both a man and a woman, somewhere in between, or completely outside those categories.

What do the colours on the flag stand for?

According to Hamilton City Magazine, the yellow stripe represents people who identify outside of the cisgender binary of male or female (their sex assigned a birth), white signifies multi-gendered people, purple is for those who identify as a mix of male and female, while black stands for people who feel they don’t have a gender (agender).

In November 2023, Nemo came out as non-binary in an interview with Swiss media outlet SonntagsZeitung and stated a preference to be refereed to as “they”/“them” in English, and using their given name instead of pronouns in German.
