What royals are allowed on Buckingham Palace balcony for King Charles’ coronation?

King Charles III is reportedly staying true to his vision of a slimmed-down version of the monarchy, as the 74-year-old has issued balcony invites to only the senior working members of the royal family.

It is monarchy tradition for the royal family to wave to the public from the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

The king’s coronation will take place May 6 at Westminster Abbey.

Slimmed-down monarchy

An inside source told the Mirror that King Charles “has been very clear who he wants to represent the monarchy.”

“There is little room for sentiment,” the source said. “This is a State occasion, not a family occasion and it is right that only the working members of the family are there at the big public moment.”

“The balcony moment will be the King’s final presentation of a slimmed down monarchy,” they continued, “which of course will be even further slimmed down once the Gloucesters, Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra finally step away from public life and into their well earned retirements.”

“It is a final thank you for them and a nod to their support of his mother during her 70 year reign.”

Who will the king allow on the balcony for the big wave?

There will be about 15 members of the royal family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace May 6, all of whom King Charles feels represent “the heartbeat and future of his family.”

Prince William, the king’s eldest son, and his wife Kate Middleton will be on the balcony along with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

The king’s sister, Princess Anne, and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence will be present, along with Prince Edward and his wife Sophie.

The Duke of Kent will attend alongside his sister, Princess Alexandra, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Prince Richard and his wife Birgitte have been invited, but their appearance will be determined on the day off, depending on “individual health problems”.

Additionally, some of Queen Elizabeth’s servants and family members have been invited to the balcony scene.

The May 6 coronation

Once the ceremony takes place, the coronation procession will tour through the Abbey and the streets of London until they get to the palace. It has been reported that there will be an impressive airshow flying over the palace at the time of the balcony appearance to celebrate the occasion.

Prince George, the king’s eldest nephew is to have an important role for the day as his grandfather’s page.

Queen Consort Camila will be crowned Queen alongside Charles’ crowning ceremony.
