A familiar face is returning to The Daily Show ahead of the 2024 United States election, with Jon Stewart set to get back in the presenter’s chair for the Comedy Central series.

The search for a permanent replacement for previous host Trevor Noah, who departed in December 2022, has taken more than a year and we’re now back to where we started…kind of.

When will Stewart be back presenting The Daily Show?

Stewart, the show’s second presenter after Craig Kilburn, will be back hosting on Monday nights only from 12 February onwards, with a team of correspondents, which will probably include Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic, Michael Kosta, Dulcé Sloan and Ronny Chieng, leading the way the rest of the week. The 61-year-old will also be involved on other nights but from a position behind the camera as executive producer.

The reason Stewart left as host

Stewart previously hosted the satirical news program for 16 years between 1999 and 2015, during which time he picked up 19 Emmy Awards for his work on the show. Having been the sole host during that first spell in the hot seat, he cited exhaustion as one of his main reasons for leaving.

Now set to be on presenting duty just one night a week, burnout is, in theory, unlikely to be an issue this time around, which is thought to be one of the reasons Stewart agreed to return.

AppleTV+ talk show The Problem cancelled

The New York native became available after the third season of his AppleTV+ talk show The Problem was cancelled, allegedly because of “creative differences” between Apple and Stewart over potential topics and guests. Hosting on Mondays will allow him to set the agenda for the rest of the week, which will no doubt have added extra appeal with the United States elections coming up later in the year.
