Taylor Swift’s eagerly awaited 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, is due to drop this Friday.

The album’s forthcoming release has generated intense anticipation among ‘Swifties’ ever since the singer-songwriter announced her new record at the Grammy Awards earlier this year.

“My brand new album comes out on April 19″

Speaking as she accepted the Best Pop Vocal Album award for Midnights at February’s gala, Swift said: “This is my 13th Grammy, which is my lucky number - I don’t know if I’ve ever told you that. I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I’ve been keeping from you for the last two years, which is that my brand new album comes out on April 19.”

Later that evening, Swift took her career total of Grammys to 14, when she scooped a record fourth Album of the Year award, also for Midnights.

What has Swift said about The Tortured Poets Department?

According to Swift, the experience of writing The Tortured Poets Department offered her an emotional “lifeline”.

During one of the Melbourne shows in her ongoing Eras concert tour, she explained to her audience in February: “Tortured Poets is an album that I think, more than any of my albums I’ve ever made, I needed to make. It was really a lifeline for me. Just the things I was going through, the things I was writing about. It kind of reminded me of why songwriting is something that actually gets me through my life.”

Does album title contain dig at former boyfriend?

After she announced The Tortured Poets Department, Billboard notes that Swift fans quickly drew attention to a potential nod to her ex-boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, in the album’s title.

Conversations with Friends star Alwyn, who was Swift’s other half for six years until they split in April last year, revealed in a 2022 interview with Variety that he and fellow actor Paul Mescal are part of a WhatsApp group called “The Tortured Man Club”.

Tortured Poets Department to “shake up the world”

Among those who have already had the opportunity to listen to Swift’s new album is her current boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce, whom she began dating late last year.

I have heard some of it, yes - and it is unbelievable,” Kelce told reporters ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII win over the San Francisco 49ers in February. “I can’t wait for her to shake up the world when it finally drops.”
