Five new episodes of Unsolved Mysteries are set to be released at the end of the month, as Netflix returns with the latest instalment of the long-running, iconic docuseries.

The fourth season to be aired by the streaming giant, which began its rebooted version of the show in 2020, this will be Unsolved Mysteries’ 18th run of episodes since it first hit small screens in the United States over three decades ago.

Initially broadcast by NBC in 1987, the series now boasts over 600 episodes.

When does Unsolved Mysteries Volume 4 premiere?

The new season of Unsolved Mysteries is due out on Netflix on Wednesday July 31, 2024. As is customary for the platform, all five episodes of Volume 4 will drop at the same time.

“We have a wide variety of cases in the next batch,” says Unsolved Mysteries co-creator Terry Dunn Meurer, who adds: “This is our most unique volume yet.”

Meurer went on: “A perfect Unsolved Mysteries episode has either multiple theories about what could have happened (’Was it an accident, or was it a homicide?’), or it will have multiple suspects. We try to present cases that have lots of twists and turns to involve the viewers in forming their own opinions.”

Which cases feature on Unsolved Mysteries Volume 4?

Episode 1: Jack the Ripper

Volume 4 begins by digging into the case of Jack the Ripper, the unidentified murderer who remains one of the world’s most notorious serial killers.

An individual who typically targeted prostitutes, Jack the Ripper is responsible for murdering at least five women in London’s Whitechapel district in the late 1880s. He has also been linked with several other killings from the period.

The case was also covered by Unsolved Mysteries in 1988.

Episode 2: Amanda Antoni

Canada woman Amanda Antoni died under mysterious circumstances in her Calgary home in October 2015. Returning from a few days away, her husband discovered Antoni’s body in the basement, amid a bloody scene that suggested she had suffered a violent demise.

Police initially viewed Antoni’s case as suspicious, but the 31-year-old was later ruled to have died accidentally by falling down the stairs. “My gut is still telling me there’s more to it,” Antoni’s brother, Darrell Hogg, told Global News ahead of the release of Unsolved Mysteries Volume 4. “There’s still a lot of stuff they can’t answer.”

Episode 3: Severed head in a wood

In December 2014, an eighth-grader came upon a woman’s embalmed head lying in a wooded area in Economy, Pennsylvania. Notably, two red rubber balls had been inserted into the orifices where her eyes had been.

“There’s nobody that deserves to be found that way,” Economy police chief Michael O’Brien told local newspaper the Beaver County Times in 2015. The woman has never been identified. Investigators don’t know how she died, or where the rest of her body ended up.

Episode 4: Sigrid Stevenson

In September 1977, 25-year-old music student Sigrid Stevenson was found murdered on the stage of a theatre at the College of New Jersey. According to the New Jersey newspaper the Times of Trenton, she was naked and had been bludgeoned to death.

Stevenson’s killer has never been caught, but the latest season of Unsolved Mysteries promises “new theories” about the identity of the culprit.

Episode 5: ‘The Mothman’

The final episode of Unsolved Mysteries Volume 4 focuses on the many claimed sightings of a winged, red-eyed creature, known only as ‘the Mothman’, in Illinois and West Virginia. “Some say it looks like a large bat or owl. Others say it resembles a man in a winged suit,” the Chicago Tribune’s Ted Slowik wrote in 2018. “Some say it’s silent, but others describe a sound like brakes screeching.”

‘The Mothman’ is said to presage major disasters. For example, the author John Keel has linked alleged sightings in West Virginia to the 1967 collapse of the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant, a tragedy that led to 46 deaths.
