A record number of contestants are taking part in the 73rd edition of the Miss Universe beauty pageant this week, as 127 women compete to succeed Nicaragua’s Sheynnis Palacios as the bearer of the prestigious crown.

Where is Miss Universe 2024 taking place?

For the first time in 17 years, Miss Universe is being held in Mexico, which is hosting the event for the fifth occasion.

Mexico City’s 22,000-capacity Arena Ciudad de México will be the venue both for Thursday’s preliminary competition - in which the extensive field of delegates will battle it out to make Saturday’s grand final - and for the main event itself.

Hosted by former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo and the television presenter Mario Lopez, the Miss Universe 2024 final show will air at 7:30 p.m ET/4:30 p.m. PT on Saturday November 16, 2024.

Viewers in the United States will be able to watch the grand final live on the streaming service Apple TV and on the Spanish-language TV channel Telemundo.

What will the Miss Universe 2024 format be?

At Miss Universe 2024, 30 semi-finalists will advance from the preliminary competition - up from 20 in 2023 - with this group of qualifiers moving on to the swimsuit round. The top 30 will include one contender chosen by a fan vote.

The next stage will feature 12 delegates, who will walk the catwalk in evening dress, before five finalists progress to a closing question-and-answer round. The winner of this deciding Q&A will be declared the new Miss Universe.
