James Vanderbilt’s powerful historical drama charts events leading up to the Nuremberg war crimes trials in which 24 Nazi leaders were tried and convicted.
When is ‘Nuremberg’ coming out? The release date, cast and trailer for the movie that took 13 years to make
In James Vanderbilt’s forthcoming movie Nuremberg, Russell Crowe delves into the extravagant, larger than life character of Nazi Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring, Andreas Pietschmann depicts Nazi party leader Rudolf Hess while Peter Jordan plays the difiant, unrepentant Karl Dönitz, German Navy Chief - three of the high-profile names among the 24 defendants who were tried during the Nuremberg war crimes trials in the months following World War II.
And Richard E. Grant stars as David Maxwell Fyfe, Britain’s chief prosecutor who is tasked with cross examining them, and psychiatrist Douglas Kelley (Rami Malek), who must decide if the 24 prisoners are mentally fit to stand trial.
Battle of wits with Nazi war criminals in the courtroom
Both both men, their job quickly turns into a psychological game of chess with all of the defendants dodging questions, shifting blame onto their superiors (but not each other) and doing whatever they can to wriggle their way out of being convicted.
Vanderbilt’s film has been adapted from Jack El-Hai’s 2013 book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist. On conclusion of the trial in October 1946, half of the defendants were sentenced to death, three were acquitted and the rest were imprisoned at Spandau. Anticipating his own fate, Göring committed suicide by cyanide poisoning the night before he was due to be executed by hanging.
