When is the ‘Saturday Night Live’ 50th anniversary special set to air?

The iconic television show confirmed that a three hour special will air on the NBC network in 2025.

The SNL family said goodbye to some fan favorites but has welcomed a strong batch of new comedians for its 48th cast.

NBC’s celebrated live sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL) which aired for the first time in October 1975 is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025.

The network announced that they plan to celebrate their half centenary anniversary with a one-off “SNL50 Primetime Special,” which will involve a three-hour spectacular.

The show first aired on NBC in October 1975 and was hosted by George Carlin with the show initially airing under the name of NBC’s Saturday Night. The show’s premise included comedy sketches which offered a take on contemporary American culture and politics, are performed by a large and varying cast of repertory and newer cast members.

Since it first aired “SNL” has won 53 Emmy Awards, the most for any show in television history. SNL also holds the title for the most nominated television show in Emmy history with 219 nominations.

Two episodes remain in the current 49th season of the show, with Maya Rudolph host the 11 May show where Vampire Weekend were the musical guests. The final episode will see Jake Gyllenhaal hosting with the actor enjoying a boost in notoriety following appearing alongside Conor McGregor in a remake of Roadhouse and Sabrina Carpenter will offer the musical interlude.

When will the 50th anniversary show air?

Details are few and far between of the structure of the 50th birthday will take with the anticipated special by Lorne Michaels, the creator and producer of “SNL,” “set to be insane.”

The 50th anniversary “SNL” 3-hour special will air live on Sunday, 16 February in 2025 from 8-11 p.m. ET, NBC confirmed.

5-timers hosts

Should SNL creator Michaels decide to invite his “Five-Timer’s Club,” (celebrities who have hosted the show at least five times), the following nigh profile stars could be part of the special in February next year with the idea being to celebrate stars of the shoe from the past: Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, John Goodman, Tom Hanks, Chevy Chase, Christopher Walken, Elliot Gould, Danny DeVito, Drew Barrymore, Tina Fey, Scarlett Johansson, Candice Bergen, Bill Murray, Justin Timberlake, Ben Affleck, Melissa McCarthy, Dwayne Johnson, Jonah Hill, Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, John Mulaney, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Kristen Wiig could all play some role in the 2025 special.
