Update:

After decades of dreaming and delays, Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein is finally becoming a reality—though not

Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited adaptation of Frankenstein is finally a reality, although fans won’t be able to enjoy it on the big screen. Written and directed by the Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker, and based on Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, Del Toro’s Frankenstein will be available to stream exclusively on Netflix from next month.

Little is known about the plot, which has been kept a closely-guarded secret, but the director is known for his great storytelling skills as well as a knack of creating gothic masterpieces.

Dream project

For many years, Del Toro had wanted to have a shot at creating his take on Shelley’s book. After years of rumors and false starts, the project remained shelved—until now. In August 2020, the director entered a multi-year deal with Netflix in which he would produce exclusive projects for the streaming service.

Oscar Isaac plays Victor Frankenstein (Christian Convery appears as the young Victor) and Jacob Elordi portrays the Creature. Charles Dance take on another villain role as Leopold Frankenstein, Victor’s strict, oppressive father.

Nominally and generically, it is a horror movie,” Del Toro told Deadline. “But horror movies, after three years of making fantasy films, you know that they can something on top of that. I think this is a family drama in many ways. It’s about the very Catholic notion of fathers and sons and the things that we transmit from one to the next generation. So, there’s that and there is the level of emotion - after 200 years for the book and the story to still provoke compassion and fear of crossing a boundary. Those are things that I think we innovated in a beautiful way”.
