With the impending 2024 solar eclipse in many parts of the USA, the Swansea native’s most famous song is back on the airwaves.

Citizens in many parts of North America are gearing up ahead of the solar eclipse on Monday 8 April as the fortunate group that lives in the path of totality, over 31 million individuals in 15 states, will have the chance to see the Moon completely block out the Sun momentarily.

The uniqueness of a total eclipse though, lies in the projection of a shadow on the Earth, which occurs thanks to the Moon completely covering the Sun for a few moments, causing a brief period of nighttime darkness during the day. During this period, the Sun’s outer atmosphere, known as the solar corona, becomes visible, showing a slight flare around Earth’s natural satellite.

The 2024 eclipse path

The path of the 2024 eclipse will start in Mexico and enter the United States via Texas before traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse.

It’s also inevitable that radio stations in the eclipse path and in many parts of the USA will be focusing on the most famous ‘eclipse’ song of all time with Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ power ballad set to dominate the airwaves.

Originally released in 1983, the epic track from Swansea songstress Bonnie Tyler, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” has become one of the best-selling singles of all time, the track inevitably gets a track boost during solar eclipses (as will be the case in the US over the weekend). During the solar eclipse of 20 March 2015, Tyler’s version received a 214% increase of Spotify streams throughout the day and during the solar eclipse of 21 August 2017, the the song hit the number one spot on the iTunes chart.

Where is Tyler now?

Aged 72, Bonnie Tyler is still heavily involved in the music business and continues to record and tour.

Spending her time between her Portuguese villa in the Algarve and her native South Wales, as recently as November 2022, Tyler embarked on her first ever tour of South America playing eight shows in Brazil and one date in Uruguay.

To mark the 40th anniversary of ‘Total Eclipse’ in 2023, the Welsh songstress embarked on an extensive European tour, and released a new ‘Best of’ collection.

Later this month, Tyler will release her third live album, ‘In Berlin’. It was recorded at the Admiralspalast in the German capital during her Between the Earth and the Stars Live Tour in May 2019 and is preceded by the single, “Faster Than the Speed of Night”.

Her memoir, Straight from the Heart, was published in September of last year and is a fantastic journey as Tyler retraces her steps growing up in a small Welsh mining village to becoming a global superstar with a career spanning five decades.
