Since its launch seven years ago, the short video social media platform, accessed via a smartphone application, TikTok has become one of the world’s most popular social media platforms with much of its success down to the astute use of recommendation algorithms that were superior than alternative apps at connecting content creators with new audiences.

Tiktok has resonated primarily with Generation Z users (those born from 1997 to 2012) with latest reports suggesting that over 40% of its users are between the ages of 15-24.

The Chinese created platform has also proved to be a lucrative platform for users to create content not only for fun but also for money and as it has evolved, brands and marketing departments are now harnessing its power to sell their products via influencer marketing as the content creators earn money through engagement, such as likes and comments.

The listing includes the likes of social media influencers, actors and singers with top billing going to the Philippine born Denarie Taylor aka Bella Poarch. In August 2020, she created the most liked video on TikTok ever (securing more than 65 million likes), in which she lip syncs to the song “M to the B” by British rapper Millie B.

Her success on the platform has lead to a lucrative music record deal with Warner Records in 2021 releasing her debut single ‘Build a Bitch’ in the same year but with recent single releases, the success of her first work has eluded the 27-year-old.

The LA based Poarch has also released a limited clothing line RIPNDIP x Paca Collaboration.

Given Poarch’s massive social media profile, a major part of her income comes from generating sponsored content on her TikTok and Instagram accounts with the Exact Net Worth platform reporting that Poarch commands a $30,000 fee per sponsored TikTok, whereas she can earns anywhere between $13,000 to $23,000 for sponsored content presented via her Instagram account where she commands 12.4 million followers.
