Who are the remaining top 8 performers on American Idol? Who was sent home?
Mia Matthews, KAYKO and Emily Russell made up the bottom three after the 10 contestants had been mentored by Shania Twain.
Season 22 of American Idol is hurtling towards its conclusion, with only eight contestants remaining after two hopefuls were sent home in the latest episode of the singing competition, which aired on Sunday (28 April).
Show number 14 of 18 featured this year’s top 10, who all received mentoring by Shania Twain, who had appeared as a guest judge (2009) and mentor (2010) in previous seasons of the contest.
As they looked to reach the top eight - and the fourth-from-last program - the remaining singers had to perform songs from the years they were born. That ranged from Jack Blocker and McKenna Faith Breinholt singing Cher’s “Believe” and the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris”, both from 1998, to Triston Harper performing 2008 country hit “She’s Country,” originally by Jason Aldean.
Who was eliminated from the Top 10?
Whether Mia Matthews, born in 2004, “cheated” or not by going for Twain’s “No One Needs to Know,” originally released in 1996 but included in the Canadian star’s “Greatest Hits” compilation eight years later, is open to interpretation. But it didn’t work out well for the Idol hopeful.
Matthews, KAYKO (Wheatus’ “Teenage Dirtbag”) and Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter Emmy Russell (Blink 182′s “All the Small Things”) ended up in the bottom three, scrapping it out for a place in the top 10.
And of the three, Russell was the one who collected the most votes, with Matthews and KAYKO the two latest contestants to depart the talent show.

When is the Grand Finale of season 22 of American Idol?
Four shows have still to be aired, the last of which will be the Grand Finale, which will crown the winner on Sunday 19 May.
Before then, the top 8 will be cut to 7 after the Judges’ Song Contest (Monday 29 April), in which judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan will suggest songs for the participants to choose from.
Adele Night, shown on 5 May, will then eliminate two more singers, leaving the top 5 to battle it out during Disney Night (12 May) for a place in the Grand Finale. The remaining three shows will all take place on Sunday nights at 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT.
