Who is Jo Koy, the host of the 2024 Golden Globes?
We profile Jo Koy, the Filipino-American comic who has been chosen to host the 81st annual Golden Globes this weekend.
Filipino-American comedian and actor Jo Koy, who is to be only the second ever Asian host of the Golden Globes, is keenly aware of the responsibility that comes with his selection for the 81st edition of the TV and film awards gala.
“A lot of kids are going to be inspired by this”
“There’s a kid that’s Asian out there, or that’s half white/half Asian, any ethnicity,” Koy told an interview with Variety this week. “Being able to see this, it will indirectly inspire them.
“This is one of those ‘finally’ moments. I don’t want to address that when I’m on stage, but I think me just being on stage is enough.
“And that’s the kind of weight on my shoulders that I have. Because I need to represent them well. So, I want to make sure my job is done right. I want to make sure I’m funny. And this wasn’t just a fluke. I worked hard for this moment.
“And I know that my family is watching, and my culture is watching and there’s a lot of kids that are going to be inspired by this.”
Koy chosen for “infectious energy and relatable humor”
Koy, who follows in the footsteps of 2019 co-anchor Sandra Oh, an actor of South Korean heritage, was announced as the host of the 2024 Golden Globes late last month. “We are thrilled to have Jo […] bring his infectious energy and relatable humor to kick off Hollywood’s award season,” Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne said in a statement.
“We can’t wait to see what he has in store for the stars in the room and a global audience. We know Jo is bringing his A-game.”
