Dua Lipa has made it official with her boyfriend at the 76th annual Cannes Film Festival. The two walked the red carpet for the premiere of ‘Omar La Fraise’ back in May 2023.

The couple looked very comfortable together, with Gavras wrapping his arm around Lipa as they posed for photographs. The two later held hands as they entered the theater.

Gavras and Dua Lipa first sparked relationship rumors earlier this year when they were photographed leaving a party together in February. However, either party has yet to officially confirm the relationship status.

Before Gavras, Lipa was in a two-year-long relationship with Anwar Hadid before they officially called it quits in 2021. Following their split, she was briefly linked to Trevor Noah in October 2022, but that same month she confirmed she was single.

Three months later she is still with Romain Gavras. Here is everything to know about the French director.

Who is Romain Gavras?

Gavras was born in 1981 in Paris, France, where he developed a passion for filmmaking early on. He is the son of Costa-Gavras and Michèle Ray-Gavras.

Costa-Gavras, whose real name is Konstantinos Gavras, is a prominent Greek-French filmmaker and screenwriter known for his politically charged and socially conscious films.

Michèle Ray-Gavras, Romain’s mother, is a French writer and actress. She has written several novels and has also appeared in films and television shows.

Both of Romain Gavras’ parents have had a significant impact on the world of cinema, and he has followed in their footsteps as a filmmaker, creating his own unique style and body of work.

Growing up in the film industry

“From a very young age I knew this was what I wanted to do,” Gavras told Étage magazine in 2016. “I enjoy making long feature films, short films, music videos, and sometimes commercials. I come from a generation raised by television, so I don’t necessarily think that films are a noble art, and you can’t do something else. I think it’s good to do a bit of everything.”

“When your whole family is into cinema, you talk about it at the dinner table, and then you go see movies and talk about them,” he told Étage magazine about his creative childhood.

He continued “I was going to the cinema as long as I can remember myself. I grew up in a film family, so there was no other choice but to make films. At the same time, I didn’t want to show my dad or mom some of the earlier things I made. I just showed them to my brother. I was very shy. For quite a bit I was shooting films on my own, and showing them to my family later, when I felt more confident about stuff I was making.”

What Gavras is known for

Gavras gained recognition for his visually striking and provocative music videos, often characterized by their intense energy, political commentary, and social criticism.

Some of his notable music video collaborations include ‘Stress’ for the French electronic duo Justice, ‘Born Free’ for M.I.A., and ‘No Church in the Wild; for Jay-Z and Kanye West. These videos garnered significant attention for their controversial content and cinematic style.

In addition to his work in music videos, Gavras has directed commercials for various brands, including Adidas, Nike, and Audi. He has also ventured into feature filmmaking, with his directorial debut being the critically acclaimed movie ‘Our Day Will Come’ in 2010, starring Vincent Cassel.
