OSCARS

Who is the oldest ever Oscar nominee?

John Williams, the 90-year-old actor from ‘The Fableman’s’ is up for a 2023 Academy Award, making him the oldest nominee ever.

Legendary composer John Williams is nominated for a 2023 Academy Award in the category of Best Original Score in honor of his work in Steven Spielberg’s 2022 film, ‘The Fabelmans’. Williams’ nomination breaks Academy records as the oldest person ever to win an Oscar.

John Williams’ music through history

Making history through music, the composer simultaneously became the most-nominated person currently living. Williams has been nominated for an Oscar 53 times in his impressive career, consistently picking up nominations for Best Original Score Academy Awards over his long, five-decade career.

The late Walt Disney still holds the record for the most nominated person ever. Disney had 59 Oscar nominations, and took home 26 trophies.

Best Original Score award

The 90-year-old composer has won five Best Original Score Oscars for his musical compositions. In 1972, Williams won the award for ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, as well as for ‘Jaws’ in 1976.

The epic ‘Star Wars’ track scored him the award in 1978. He won for the children’s classic ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’ in 1983, and again in 1994 for his music in the Nazi war movie, ‘Schindler’s List’.

Williams has been nominated for films such as 1998′s ‘Saving Private Ryan’, 2001′s ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’, 2005′s ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’, as well as the ‘Star Wars’ sequel trilogy.

Prior to Oscars week, rumors had spread that John Williams would retire after his work on ‘The Fabelmans’, as well as his other recent work, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’.

No retirement in sight

The composer himself put the speculation to rest, as he revealed in March that he won’t be stepping away from his role anytime soon. Williams said that he will keep going, because he can’t imagine a life without music.

“I’ll stick around for awhile,” John Williams told director Steven Spielberg at an event. “I can’t retire from music. A day without music is a mistake.”

Williams and Spielberg have made numerous films together, with 17 of them scoring Oscars nominations.

In their 50-year partnership, they have done the ‘Empire of the Sun’, ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘Munich’, ‘War Horse’, ‘Lincoln’, and ‘The Post’.

The 95th Academy Awards will be broadcast on Sunday, March 12, at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m PT. See the full Oscars 2023 guide here.
