Matthew McConaughey reveals that he took on his role of Benjamin Barry in ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ because of a random encounter with a fortune teller.

During an interview with Vanity Fair the ‘Interstellar’ actor explained that after his audition for the now iconic role, he wasn’t completely sold on the part and was unsure if he was going to take it on.

But while on a walk down Sunset Boulevard, debating the role, McConaughey reveals he was stopped by a fortune teller who asked permission to give him a quick fortune. McConaughey said yes and the man shocked the actor.

“He immediately goes, ‘There’s a movie you’re considering right now. It’s a romantic comedy. You have to do this or it will be one of the biggest regrets of your life,’” McConaughey said. “‘It is going to be a blast, it is going to be an incredible experience and it is going to make a bunch of money.’”

“I remember thinking, ‘Did the studio hire this guy?’ I laughed at the thought, but I also remember taking a more serious consideration,” he said. “I think I even accepted the offer the next day.

Lucky for McConaughey the film went on to make $177.5 million in box office sales and has become a well known and iconic romantic comedy that had its 20th anniversary in January.
