ROYAL FAMILY
Why did King Charles and Camilla go to Germany?
The royal couple is left for Germany Wednesday, with a packed schedule planned for their trip.
King Charles III and Queen Consort Camila are off on their trip to Germany this week. The couple, set to leave Wednesday, are headed to Berlin, Brandenburg, and Hamburg in the short span of time between Wednesday and Friday.
This will be the couple’s last engagement abroad before the King’s coronation on May 6.
A royal welcome
The couple will be greeted by President Steinmeier and Frau Büdenbender in a welcome ceremony at the Brandenburg Gate, which will make history as the first time a foreign head of state has been welcomed at the site.
Later, King Charles and Camilla will attend a State Banquet where they will be guests of honor. There the king will address the Bundestag, the federal legislature.
King Charles’ Corps of Royal Engineers’ duties
King Charles will go solo to Brandenburg, as he is scheduled to meet Germany-based representatives from the Corps of Royal Engineers.
While visiting the regiment’s German base, King Charles will also see a live demonstration. The corps had amphibious vehicles that can build bridges.
The king has just been announced as the new Colonel-in-Chief of the Corps of Royal Engineers, a title previously held by his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
Prior to his trip to Germany, King Charles met with the UK-based chief royal engineer Lieutenant General Sir Tyrone Richard Urch at Buckingham Palace to discuss the corps’ agenda and prepare for the meeting with more Corps of Royal Engineers representatives once in Brandenburg.
According to a statement made by the palace, the purpose of the Corps of Royal Engineers is to provide the world with innovative technology.
“Commonly known as the Sappers, the Corps was founded in 1716 and gained the prefix Royal in 1787,” a statement from Buckingham Palace read upon the announcement of the king’s new title, “the royal statement read. “They operate at the forefront of innovation to provide global military engineering and technical support to the British Armed Forces and their allies.”
The queen consort at the opera
Queen Consort Camilla will be joining Frau Büdenbender at the Berlin Komische Opera.
While there, the women will learn about the institution’s outreach projects, as well as community engagement initiatives.
