Why was Tom Holland not by Zendaya’s side at the 2023 SAG Awards?

Zendaya recently made her long-awaited red carpet return on Sunday for the 2023 SAG Awards, stunning fans with her glamorous look. But the actress walked the red carpet alone, with her boyfriend, fellow actor Tom Holland, nowhere in sight.

But his absence may not be that surprising, the actor has been on an acting break since early 2022, with no info as to how long he will be staying out of the spotlight.

Tom Holland’s break from the spotlight

While Holland may not have had a physical presence by Zendaya’s side on Sunday’s award show, he showed his support and enthusiasm for her on social media.

Zendaya posted pictures of her look for the 2023 NAACP Image Awards on Saturday, with Holland commenting three heart eye emojis on her post. The inconsequential comment is a big PDA moment for the extremely private couple.

The actor has been on a social media break since August 2022, citing mental health reasons. His Instagram account has been sporadically active, mainly in support of his charity The Brothers Trust, run by Holland’s family, using his fame to support several charities.

In the past, the couple has posted photos of each other on their respective Instagram accounts.

A low-key romance

Zendaya and Holland have kept their relationship as private as possible, rarely speaking about one another and rarely being seen together at public events, aside from press tours and red-carpet walks for the ‘Spider-Man’ films where they played the starring roles of Spider-Man and MJ.

They had the intention of keeping their relationship status to themselves, until paparazzi caught the pair making out in a car in November 2021, forcing them to confirm that they were dating.

“One of the downsides of our fame is that privacy isn’t really in our control anymore,” Holland said regarding the incident. “And a moment that you think is between two people that love each other very much is now a moment that is shared with the entire world.”

“I’ve always been really adamant to keep my private life private, because I share so much of my life with the world anyway. We sort of felt robbed of our privacy.”

“I don’t think it’s about not being ready. It’s just that we didn’t want to,” the actor added.

“It was quite strange and weird and confusing and invasive,” Zendaya said of the photos.

“The equal sentiment [we both share] is just that when you really love and care about somebody, some moments or things, you wish were your own.”
