‘Wicked’ director working on Britney Spears biopic says singer ‘will be very involved’ in the movie
‘Wicked’ director Jon Chu has given a brief update on his latest project- the Britney Spears biopic based on the pop singer’s best-seller, The Woman in Me.
After his triumph at the recent Golden Globes, “Wicked” director Jon Chu gave a brief update on the next movie he is working on, the biopic of pop superstar Britney Spears.
Following the success of the singer’s memoir, “The Woman In Me,” Universal Pictures acquired the rights to the book in August last year to capture her life and career in a biographical film.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Chu admitted they were still in the early days of production, but said Spears “will be very involved” in the process. He says he has ideas and an approach for the movie.
‘The Woman in Me’ receives commercial and critical success
In 2022, Spears signed a $15 million deal to write and publish a book about her life. In the United States alone, “The Woman In Me” has sold more than 2.5 million copies in hardcover, e-book, and audiobook formats.
The book chronicles her rise to fame, relationships, conservatorship, and regaining her freedom.
It was the most-streamed audiobook on Spotify in 2023 and was a New York Times bestseller. There are now more than three million copies in print globally.

Which actress will play Britney Spears?
There have been many rumors about which actress will be taking on the role of Spears, particularly on social media.
Names that have cropped up include celebrities such as Sabrina Carpenter, Tate McRae, Sydney Sweeney, Dove Cameron, Millie Bobby Brown and Florence Pugh.
Chu has commented on the matter, and says he is keeping an eye out for suggestions.
“I’ve seen all the fan castings and I always keep them in mind because there might be a good idea out there,” said the director.
He adds they still need to determine the focus of the film before they can decide who the right person will be for the role.

In an interview with Billboard, Chu revealed himself to be a huge admirer of the Princess of Pop.
“I’ve been a fan since I was young, and she was young, and it was one of 12 performances at the Shrine Auditorium. So I want to do her justice and tell her story properly,” he said.
Since the project is still in its early stages of development, Universal Pictures has not yet announced a date for the film’s release. The movie has also not yet been cast.
However, the studio says Spears will play a major role in selecting the actors, as she will have to give her full approval to the casting, including the coveted role of the multi-award-winning artist.
