Will Emma Mackey be part of ‘Sex Education’ Season 5?
‘Sex Education’ lead Emma Mackey’s time on the show looks to be nearing its conclusion.
Emma Mackey recently announced that she’ll be leaving the Netflix series ‘Sex Education’ after Season 4 if the show is renewed for a fifth season.
The actress shared the news after winning the Rising Star award at the 2023 BAFTA Awards on Sunday.
Saying goodbye to Maeve… and Eric
After her speech, Mackey spoke with Radio Times backstage at the award show where she answered questions about her place in the upcoming seasons of ‘Sex Education’.
“Season 5? I’ve just finished the fourth one last week!” the actress laughed, “No I don’t think I’ll be in Season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.”
Mackey previously said that Maeve would have a smaller role in the upcoming fourth season of ‘Sex Education’, saying: “It feels very familiar! And it’s a bit more sporadic because we have more characters. So there’s… I’m not in it as consistently.”
“I’m intrigued to know what’s going to happen — because I also don’t know. I’m also finding out as we go along, so it’ll be fun!”
Ncuti Gatwa, who plays Eric in the series, will also be moving on after Season 4. Gatwa announced his departure in an Instagram post earlier this month captioned “Last day. Last time. Bye bubs, thank you for all the lessons and for all the strength.”
Gatwa will be taking up the Doctor Who mantle, playing the 15th doctor in the series’ 14th season. Gatwa will be the first Black and fourth Scottish actor to play the Doctor.
But Mackey and Gatwa will soon be seen together in the upcoming ‘Barbie’ movie. Mackey is set to play the sister to Margot Robbie’s eponymous Barbie character, while Gatwa will play another Ken, alongside Ryan Gosling.
Excitement for ‘Sex Education’ Season 4
Mackey’s Maeve is one of the main characters in the series alongside Asa Butterfield, who plays Otis Milburn. The two high schoolers run an unauthorized sex education clinic at their school, offering relationship and sex advice to the student body for money.
The series has a number of characters dealing with various issues related to sexuality. Gillian Anderson plays Jean Milburn, Otis’ mom and sex therapist.
