Hollywood superstars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over the Welsh club in November 2020 as it languished in the fifth tier National League with debts crippling the progression of the club in North Wales.

Their first season in charge saw the Red Dragons falling short in securing the desperately needed promotion to the Football League as the Red Dragons slipped up in the playoffs losing to Grimsby Town.

There was a happier ending the following campaign as the team secured automatic promotion to League 2 after a titanic battle all season with rivals Notts County.

The involvement of the Hollywood duo at the club has been beautifully chronicled with the documentary “Welcome to Wrexham” which follows the club’s rise since its purchase by Reynolds and McElhenney in November 2020.

The Red Dragons now boast fanclubs across the world and have shattered merchandise sales for a lower league club in short due to the impact of the FX Entertainment production which has scooped four Emmy Awards.

The third edition of the FX/Disney Plus documentary series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ was released on 2 May and documents the trials and tribulations of the club in their first season in League 2 and drive to secure a back-to-back promotions to the third tier League 1.

Season 4 confirmed

The good news for Wrexham fans is the confirmation of a fourth season which will document how the Red Dragons prevail in the third tier of the English pyramid with the new football season commencing in August 2024.

“Wrexham AFC has exceeded all expectations on the pitch and with fans, scoring back-to-back promotions under the leadership of Rob and Ryan and rising to compete in League One next season,” said Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment.

The current three seasons not only chronicle the trials and tribulations of the football team on the pitch, but delves into the community and tackles issues such as unemployment, depression, the club’s hooligan problems and just how much the football club means to the fans in a small town in North Wales.

Reynolds and McElhenney play a substantial role in all seasons and transmit a refreshingly genuine affection for the club and what it means to the town of Wrexham.

The Canadian summed up his relationship with the Red Dragons after the 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers which cemented League 1 promotion as Reynolds stated: A few years ago, if you told me I would be crying tears of joy over a football match taking place in North Wales, you would be Rob McElhenney. Congrats to Wrexham and to my co-chairman in crime. Double up the town! This is the ride of our lives”.

Welcome to Wrexham series four is likely to begin airing in May 2025.
